About Us CIT@Tyndall

The Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall) was created in 2004 at the initiative of the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment and University College Cork (UCC) to bring together complementary activities in photonics, electronics and networking research at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC), several UCC academic departments and Cork Institute of Technology (CIT). The objective is to create a research institute, which would become a focal point of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Ireland, to support industry and academia nationally and to increase the number of qualified graduate students for the ‘knowledge economy’.

The CIT@Tyndall initiative was formally marked in 2008 by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by then Minister for Science & Education, Batt O’Keeffe, in the presence of the three institute heads; CIT President Dr. Brendan Murphy, UCC President Dr. Michael Murphy and Tyndall CEO Prof. Roger Wattmore. CIT@Tyndall facilitates the close collaboration between Tyndall and CIT which sees CIT researchers and students based both full-time and part-time in Tyndall. CAPPA accounts for almost all of the CIT presence in Tyndall where our activities are part of Tyndall's Photonics Centre. Within the Photonics Centre we lead a strand focused on Photonic Device Dynamics and also collaborate with a number research groups within Tyndall on a wide range of fundamental and applied research programmes.
