QUATERNIAN – Quantum Dot Technologies for Extended Reach Nodes in Access Networks

The QUATERNIAN project is a two-year, €0.8M project funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme under the Research for the Benefit of SMEs scheme. Coordinated by the CAPPA group through Tyndall National Institute, it involves four industry partners and two Research Providers, aiming to apply quantum dot based technologies to the last span of optical communications systems.

Project Description

Semiconductor quantum dots are a major advance in the growth of lasers and optical amplifiers. Lasers built from this material class offer revolutionary performance advantages such as low noise, temperature insensitivity and reduced non-linearities.

The QUATERNIAN project aims to apply this technology to the last span of optical communications systems. Through wired and wireless connections, high speed internet traffic is often bogged down by slow and unreliable peripheral networks, fundamentally due to cost constraints. In QUATERNIAN we will exploit the quantum-dot device advances to reduce the cost of transponders, to extend the reach of passive optical networks, and to support higher data throughputs to mobile internet devices.

The main goals of QUATERNIAN are:

  • Realise high power Raman pump modules to support long-reach passive optical networking.
  • Develop high purity discrete-mode transmitter lasers for high-speed digital and analogue modulation.
  • Progress distributed antenna systems for simplified deployment and superior in-building connectivity.
