Epi-Light Ltd. is a progressive and dynamic indigenous photonic technology company based in Cork. Epi-Light was established in 2006 with the goal of developing optical solutions and products based on High Brightness Light Emitting Diode (HB LED) platforms for specific applications primarily in the life science and industrial markets. Since inception Epi-Light has developed unrivalled expertise in LED based system development and production and this has allowed the company to expand its product portfolio and target markets. Epi-Light now develops and manufactures products and systems across multiple applications.
Consultancy & Contract R&D
CAPPA has worked with Epi-Light since 2008 on various direct funded consultancy projects as well as a short-term R&D project supported by Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Voucher programme. The focus of this work has been to provide Epi-Light with tailored support during the development cycle of new products and improvement of existing products. CAPPA offers expertise and capabilities in areas such as optical simulation and characterisation of light sources which compliment Epi-Light’s technology and product portfolio.
CAPPA and Epi-Light have engaged in collaborative R&D which has been supported jointly by the company and Enterprise Ireland under their Innovation Partnership programme which completed in 2011. CAPPA also worked closely with Epi-Light on an EU Framework 7 project funded by the European Commission. The project is entitled Aqua-Pulse and aims to develop a water purification system based on a photocatalytic reactor to be excited using UV LEDs. The project consortium is comprised of Epi-Light, CAPPA, University of Ulster, Teknolgisk Institut (Norway), Advanced Materials (Czech Republic) and Unik Filtersystems (Norway). Research initiated in September 2011 and completed in August 2013. This was the company’s first European project and has come as a result of close collaboration with CAPPA over the past number of years.
“The [Aqua-Pulse] project provides Epi-Light with an opportunity to develop expertise in the water purification area which is an area with very high potential for LED technology in the medium to long term. There is an opportunity for Epi-Light to gain additional experience in deep UV technology and to apply this to Epi-Light’s standard product range.”
