Logitech is a world leader in personal peripherals, driving innovation in PC navigation, Internet communications, digital music, home-entertainment control, gaming and wireless devices. Logitech have operated a Design Centre in Cork since 1988. As well as leading edge product design, Logitech Cork is involved in supporting the company globally in a diverse range of areas including financial shared services, OEM sales management, supply chain activities and other related functions. Products designed in Cork include retail mice, trackballs, digital pens and advanced universal remote controls.
CAPPA worked with Logitech on a direct funded R&D project in 2008 to investigate the design and optimisation of the illumination scheme for their next generation universal remote control. The work focused on optical simulation using non-sequential ray tracing of proposed designs to aid the prototype life-cycle. CAPPA’s contribution helped to reduce Logitech’s design and debug time and improved the evenness of the backlighting. After the product had successfully passed its design testing, including the backlighting performance of which our work was focussed on, it entered mass production in Q2 2009. Logitech launched the Harmony® 700 Universal Remote in September 2009.
