Double PRTLI Success for CAPPA – Jul 19th 2010

CAPPA has received funding under two projects in the the latest phase of the Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions (PRTLI) which invests in physical infrastructure and research projects in higher education institutions. This is a €360 million investment plan for research and innovation which will create jobs and new enterprises and drive Ireland's economic recovery. Under Cycle 5 of the programme, announced last Friday (July 16th) the Government will invest €297 million, with €63 million coming from private, non-Exchequer, sources.

The Centre for Research in Advanced Therapeutic Engineering (CREATE) received an investment of €3.6M under the capital infrastructure strand and will facilitate and promote multidisciplinary research, teaching and learning and knowledge transfer in the areas of bio-molecule discovery, biomedical engineering and advanced optical imaging. When completed this new facility will house CAPPA's on campus activities at CIT along with researchers in the Biology, Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering Departments.

In addition CAPPA also received €299k in funding as part of the National Graduate Education Programme in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (INSPIRE) under the Graduate Research Education Programme Strand. This will see the photonics researchers at CIT join with other leading researchers across the state to provide 4th Level graduate training in nanoscience and technology. The other partners in this €3.4M programme are University College Cork/Tyndall National Institute, Dublin City University, Dublin Institute of Technology, National University of Ireland Galway & University of Limerick. This graduate programme builds on the successful PRTLI4-funded Integrated NanoScience Platform for Ireland (INSPIRE) collaboration of which CIT is also a member.
