Davide Monopoli
Ph.D. Student
Davide received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electronics Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari (POLIBA), Italy, in 2022. He is currently pursuing a Double-Degree PhD between POLIBA and Munster Technological University (MTU, Ireland) that will end in May 2026, where his research centers on the design, fabrication, and testing of hybrid laser systems using photonic integrated circuits (PICs). His experimental work encompasses the development of fiber-coupled RSOA, long external cavity hybrid lasers with SiN (800 nm) side-coupled Fabry–Perot (FP) resonators for multi-wavelength emission, butt-coupled RSOA with integrated SiN (300 nm) side-coupled FP for single-line emission around 110 kHz, and preliminary fully-integrated single-frequency lasers leveraging micro-transfer printed RSOA coupons with SiN FP cavities. These platforms target applications in nonlinear optics (including dissipative Kerr solitons and optical frequency combs), dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) telecom systems, and advanced space photonics. Additionally, Davide contributed to the numerical modeling of optical links for Free Space Optical (FSO) communication—particularly Optical Feeder Links (OFL)—completing a one-year period at the ESTEC center of the European Space Agency (ESA, Netherlands), where he developed an optical turbulence simulator. His research interests include laser dynamics, optical sensing, integrated photonics, device miniaturization, and semiconductor optoelectronics.
