Project Description
The FOSPHOR initiative focuses on forging strategic cross-campus MTU photonics research partnerships for global challenges. The Higher Education Authority under the Technological University Transformation Fund (TUTF) and Munster Technological University (MTU) funds the FoSPhoR initiative. The FoSPhoR initiative aims to forge new cross campus interdisciplinary partnerships leveraging photonics as an enabling technology. Photonics is the science of generating, controlling and detecting light. Photonics is all about light and light based technologies. The field is at the crossroads of several disciplines including physics, electronics, mathematics and chemistry. Photonics is a key enabling technology for a wide range of applications. In 2015, the world market for photonics products was €447billion. This has led to photonics being identified as one of six key enabling technologies underpinning the European Union’s Horizon 2020 funding programme. It underpins a diverse range of application areas from sensing and detection through spectroscopy and imaging right up to the lasers and fibre optics that form the backbone of the internet. As an underpinning technology, it is very well suited to cross-disciplinary collaborations. These collaborations are prerequisites now for addressing the global society challenges and the UN sustainable development goals.
Approach
FOSPHOR hopes to build a multi skilled MTU community, which would be ideally placed to tackle these challenges. CAPPA has a strong track record in research funding and FOSPHOR looks to leverage this wealth of experience beyond CAPPA. CAPPA will continue to work with the existing research centres that they have established relationships with but FOSPHOR particularly focuses on building new relationships. This will include working with research groups that CAPPA has not previously worked with and working with new and emerging researchers or academic staff that are just starting to become interested in working in the research area.
